The Los Angeles Lakers are an American professional basketball team based in Los Angeles, California. The Lakers were founded in 1947, they were a purchase of a disbanded team, the Detroit Gems. The Lakers originally played in Minneapolis, Minnesota, calling themselves the Minneapolis Lakers in honor of the state's nickname, "Land of 10,000 Lakes". After struggling financially in the late 1950s they relocated to Los Angeles before the 1960-61 season. The Lakers play their home games at Staples Center an arena found in Los Angeles.The Lakers are one of the most successful teams in NBA history winning 16 NBA championships.

Earvin “Magic” Johnson
           

Born August 14, 1959 Earvin “Magic” Johnson Jr. is a retired American professional basketball player who played for the Los Angeles Lakers. He played as a point guard during the time he played for 13 seasons. After winning championships in high school and college, Johnson was selected first overall in the 1979 NBA draft by the Lakers. He won a championship and as NBA Finals Most Valuable Player Award in his rookie season, and won four more championships with Lakers during the 1980s. After announcing that he had contracted HIV Johnson retired in 1991, but still returned in the 1992 All-Star game, winning the All-Star MVP Award. After protests from his fellow players, he retired again for four years, but returned in 1996, at age 36, to play 32 games for the Lakers before retiring for the third and final time.
